The Impact of the TAVI Pathway Optimization Project
Heart centers in Italy have seen demand for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) procedures grow by 21% over the last seven years. Pisa University Hospital aimed to be more responsive to the increasing demand of the Tuscany population to have access to the procedure. Therefore, the hospital wanted to increase process efficiency and volumes, optimize patient pathways, and utilize its full capacity potential.
To address this, the hospital engaged Medtronic IHS to implement the TAVI Pathway Optimization Project. The collaboration was a resounding success. The total annual number of TAVI procedures increased by 20%. The efficiency of each phase of the patient journey was dramatically enhanced. No resources or infrastructure were added.
Increased TAVI procedures by 20%
Reduced length of stay by at least one day per TAVI patient
Potential to increase revenues by €1.92 million (if suggested solutions will be implemented)
Due to Medtronic IHS’ expertise and structured and multidisciplinary approach, we were able to increase production levels and realize our growth ambitions.

Within eight months of our partnership, the hospital increased the total number of TAVI procedures by 24% without adding resources or capacity.
A same-day discharge approach for cardiac patients freed up 8-10 ward beds and allowed St. Antonius hospital to increase capacity while maintaining quality and patient satisfaction.
Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust enlisted IHS to help create a playbook that could be rolled out across NHS England to replicate a successful and sustainable day surgery pathway.
